M&E and MEICA installations are characterised by multi-discipline teams working in close proximity — mechanical pipework, electrical containment, instrumentation, and ICA all competing for the same space and the same programme window. Sector-Specific H&S Challenges
- Working at height for building services — cable containment runs, ductwork installations, and mechanical pipework typically require MEWP or scaffold access at height. Working at height above live plant or in congested areas requires specific method statements and scaffold or MEWP inspection.
- Temporary works for heavy plant lifts — large pumps, motors, transformers, and plant items often require temporary steelwork, crane outrigger pads, or falsework during installation. BS 5975 Temporary Works Coordination is essential for any lift or installation involving structural loading.
- Multi-discipline interface — civil groundworks, mechanical installation, electrical termination, and ICA commissioning all run concurrently on MEICA projects. Each trade's RAMS needs to account for the adjacent trades' activities. Managing this interface — and ensuring each sub-contractor's method statement reflects the actual site conditions — is where H&S breakdowns typically occur.
- Live service isolation — MEICA work frequently ties in to or modifies existing services. Formal isolation procedures, permit-to-work, and confirmation of isolation before any work begins on energised systems is non-negotiable.
- Commissioning phase risks — the transition from construction to commissioning introduces new hazards as systems are energised, pressurised, or set to run for the first time. CDM Principal Designer input to the H&S File should address commissioning-phase risk specifically.
