Industrial and manufacturing construction takes place in some of the most hazardous working environments in the UK — live plant, stored energy, hazardous substances, and complex electrical systems operating alongside construction activities. We bring direct experience of managing construction work in these environments, where a standard site inspection approach is not sufficient.
Sector-Specific H&S Challenges
- Live plant environments — construction adjacent to or within operating facilities requires robust permit-to-work systems, formal isolation procedures, and clear delineation between operational and construction areas. A site inspection checklist designed for a greenfield site will miss the critical risks on a live industrial site.
- Mechanical and electrical hazards — high-voltage equipment, pressure systems, rotating machinery, and stored energy require specific LOTO (lock-out/tag-out) procedures and pre-work isolation verification.
- DSEAR awareness — Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 apply where construction takes place in or near areas with flammable or explosive atmospheres. CDM pre-construction information must identify DSEAR-controlled zones and design out ignition sources where possible.
- COMAH awareness — construction on or adjacent to COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) sites requires coordination with the site operator's safety management system. We do not provide COMAH safety reports, but we ensure CDM advisory and site inspections are delivered in a way that is compatible with the operator's risk control framework.
- Planned shutdowns and turnarounds — shutdown periods compress large amounts of work into short timeframes with high sub-contractor density. Programme and H&S management must work in lockstep. Our integrated PM + H&S approach is particularly well-suited to shutdown delivery.
